History and Meaning of Valentine's Day
But first, let's go back to the beginning: Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14th? And where does the tradition come from?

There are different stories about its origin. One of them (the most romantic one, of course) goes back to Saint Valentine of Terni, or Valentine of Rome, who lived in Italy in the 3rd century AD. Legend has it that the saint, a priest, married lovers in a Christian ceremony despite the church’s ban. His marriages were considered particularly happy and he himself became a symbol of love. Valentin is said to have given the newlyweds flowers from his garden. However, he was persecuted for his actions and imprisoned.

The legend continues that while in prison, Valentine healed the blind daughter of his jailer and wrote her a farewell letter with the words "Your Valentine". On February 14, 269, poor Valentine was executed for his forbidden acts. In his honor, as a memorial day, February 14th is celebrated as Valentine's Day, the day of love.

Valentine's Day Traditions and Customs
Valentine's Day customs vary greatly from country to country. In Japan, for example, it is customary for women to give chocolate on February 14th. A month later, on March 14th, the men return the gesture. In Great Britain, on the other hand, it is traditional to send anonymous love messages called "valentines". Our northern neighbors, the Danes, give their loved ones white snowdrops as a sign of affection. In Germany, Valentine's Day only became popular after World War II. Germans are very traditional when it comes to choosing gifts. Flowers, restaurant visits, sweets and chocolates, as well as vouchers are well received. According to a survey by Statista and the market research institute YouGov from 2020, furniture, household appliances, and electrical appliances are, on the other hand, absolutely unpopular gifts for both men and women in Germany. So, better stay away from those!

How is Valentine's Day celebrated in Germany?
Valentine's Day fever is relatively low in Germany. While some celebrate the day with gifts and roses, others reject the day as a commercialized and inauthentic custom. Many prefer to express their love independently of a specific day. Instead of gifts, couples also look for alternative ways to show their love, such as through a shared hobby or surprises on ordinary days.
